Editors Note - I received some information from various sources on a piece of legislation that is currently being discussed. Legislation is being proposed that will restrict any and all wake enhancing devices on the Wilamette in Oregon. If you are a wake enthusiest of any type this should be a key issue, especially if you are a regular in that area. However, even if you are not in Oregon, this has the potential to effect us all. Please read below amd take action.

I am writing today to let you know about proposed legislation that may add serious use restrictions to the Willamette River. The Oregon State Marine Board is currently researching if there is a need to restrict wake size. If they feel regulations are needed, there are several routes they could take. The top four at this time are:

  • Make all ballast illegal (this includes the Wedge)
  • Make wakeboarding illegal in certain areas
  • Restrict the size of boats down to 21 or 22 feet
  • Implement several large “No Wake” zones.

At this point it is specifically the Willamette River from Willamette Falls in Oregon City up to Newburg. But I feel if restrictions are put in place in this area, waterfront home owners all over the state will be calling for legislation.

Now is the time for everyone who loves to get out behind the boat to let those who will be making the decision that increased regulation is not the answer. We, as a group, need to be responsible for our wakes and truly operate our boats in a manner that respects all property owners. I firmly believe we can do this without regulations that will limit use for everyone.

Please read through the information and invest a few minutes to make sure we avoid increased regulations of a sport we love. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like to know more about the Marine Board’s process for resolving this issue.
